Cohaagen: Star Trek TNG Getting the Remastered Treatment After All?

It would appear so, according to several sources... Just last week LeVar Burton said on twitter that he had stopped by CBS Paramount Television City to "see how the TNG conversion to HD for Blue Ray was coming along..." and that he was "mind blown" with the results.

As some of you may be aware, a few months ago Netflix signed a non-exclusive deal with CBS allowing them to digitally stream the entire Star Trek library to their customers, along with popular ancillary titles like MacGyver. Well, that arrangement definitely tripped our sensors. Not only is that financial incentive for TNG Remastered to move forward, but the fact that J.J. Abrams' big-screen Trek sequel is likely to start shooting in September (for theatrical release next year) provides a sufficient marketing/cross-promotional incentive too. So after several months of looking into this, our industry sources have finally begun hinting that TNG Remastered IS moving forward and that Netflix (and possibly Paramount's Epix cable channel, which has a strong relationship with the streaming service) may be the first place you'll finally see it - in HD - starting sometime in the fall. Meanwhile, SD TNG episodes will begin appearing on Netflix in July

The reason many thought this would never happen is the great cost in doing so... The original shots were indeed on 35mm film, *BUT* all of the editing and special effects were done directly on video tape (i.e. VHS quality). Even the DVD transfers are really just cleaned up VHS and the lack of quality is very noticeable. Thus, to make a remastered, HD version of the series all of the special effects excluding model and miniature shots will have to be remade and re-applied.

I'll be among those first in line when they come out with the bluray release... Not like I need yet another excuse to re-watch the entire series.

Hell yes. I don't see much I recognize from the comics (other than the glimpse of Hershel and Maggie at the end), but I'm ready for more regardless...
